General Motors Corporation offers two full size pickup trucks which are the GMC Sierra and the Chevrolet Silverado. The Silverado is offered by Chevrolet in four different models that is 1500, Hybrid, 2500 HD and 3500 HD.
The 1500 and Hybrid are considered as light duty trucks or simply as Light. They are available in three cabin lengths which are 2 door standard / regular cabin or 3 to 4 door extended cabin or the front hinged 4 door crews cabin. In relation to the cabin size, three different length cargo beds are available too. For the first year of production, only the regular cabin and the 3 door extended cabins were made available. The 4 door extended cabin model was added later along with a more powerful engine. The Silverado has received a marginal overall score on crash tests due to poor structural integrity which has dented its reputation as per safety concerns.
The 2500 HD and 3500 HD are considered as heavy duty trucks by Chevrolet. The basic structure is similar to that of the 1500 Silverado but the drive train, interior and exterior appearance haven received upgrades. Unlike the 1500 which uses a 5.3 litre V8 engine, the heavy duty lineage uses a 6 litre V8 engine that spews out more power. This is the same engine that was employed in the second generation Cadillac Escalade. The 2500 HD comes equipped with a six speed transmission as does the 3500 HD although it is also equipped with “dually” twin wheels at the rear and has a more robust suspension. More generally, the HD models find greater use as tow trucks for light weight and heavy weight cargo.
In terms of an overall safety rating, the NHTSA crash test ratings were satisfactory for all but a roll over situation. Four wheels ABS are standard on all Silverado models while side curtain air bags are offered as options on certain trim levels. Since, 2010 however, the side structure has been reinforced and new air bags have been added even on standard models.
The 2011 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 model is equipped with a 16 valve, V8, 4.8L engine, which can produce a 302 horse power, and a V8, 5.3L engine, with a 315 horse power. This model achieves a mileage of 14 mpg in cities, and 19 miles per gallon of fuel on highways. This model is equipped with a standard modern technology features package, such as air conditioning, remote keyless entry system, and safety features like, air bags, child door locks and traction control.
